Our most recent assessment and crit was based around the project title of ‘Place’. Originally i wanted to work around the idea of an actual place, a place that people often view as a spiritual place. I immediately wanted to focus my work on sunsets and how these images can be seen as spiritual and holy from what they portray. However, this became a bit too basic and i wanted to explore further. I was then reminded of an artist called Jessie Brennan who entered the Jerwood drawing prize this year and came a very notable 2nd place. Here is the piece that she exhibited…

When i went to see the exhibition i was completely inspired by this intricate and delicate piece of work. It is 5 metres in length and around 30 cm tall. What i really liked about this piece was the fact that it has been turned into a fantasy world for the characters in the piece. Seeing this work again helped me to make the decision to make work based on this ‘fantasy world’ concept.

I made the decision that in order for this place to be created i simply needed to just draw it, without thinking, by taking images from my head and translating them onto the paper. I must admit that this is not my forte and i struggled throughout the process to come up with images that i could actually draw – i work a lot more from life and photographs. What i put to paper consisted of urban and suburban worlds, merged together on one piece of paper. The urban world dominating the rural existence, an image that i feel is very appropriate for the current situation of our planet. So i guess you could say that it is an eco-aware piece but that is just an aspect. It is a symbol of how our two versions of reality really mix and integrate with each other. I wanted to make this apparent through using small bits of intricate detail. So here it is. ENJOy…
